Patterson senior guard Gary Blackston got his first exposure to big-time Baltimore City basketball when Lake Clifton visited on Friday.
The atmosphere was lively, the tempo was fast and the intensity was cranked up high for all 32 minutes.
Blackston, a transfer from Joppatowne, was right at home.
He played big in getting the No. 2 Clippers off to a fast start and he also had many of the answers when the No. 7 Lakers made a push. Blackston finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds in No. 2 Patterson’s 55-46 win.
The Clippers, which also got 13 points and four assists from senior guard Dereck Oliver, improved to 4-0 this season and 1-0 in the league, while Lake Clifton fell to 4-1 and 1-1.
“It was definitely a lot of crowd hype, it’s more fast paced and it’s a game of runs,” Blackston said. “[In Harford County,] if you get up, you’re up and going to win the game. First quarter, we got up a lot but [Lake Clifton] they kept cutting the lead, cutting the lead. We just took our time, stayed patient and played four good quarters of basketball.”
A hot-shooting first quarter gave the home team to a 19-7 lead that would increase to 29-14 midway through the second quarter, with Blackston and Oliver accounting for 18 of the points. Blackston hit a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to make it 32-19 at the break and then converted a three-point play at the start of the fourth quarter to make it 42-31 before the Lakers made their biggest push.
Senior guard Gary Jefferson (12 points) started the run with two free throws, junor guard Shawntaze Drake nailed a 3-pointer and junior guard Kai Thompson (12 points) took a feed from Drake for an easy transition basket that cut the Clippers lead to 42-38 with 5:27 to play.
Patterson called time out and then Blackston made the game’s biggest play.
Oliver got to the free throw line on the next possession and made the first to make it 43-38. When he missed on his second try, Blackston got inside position to grab the rebound and get a put back to push the lead back up to 45-38 with 5:15 to play. Oliver got to the line two more times soon after, making three of four, to complete a 6-0 run that restored order.
“It was a great win for us — everybody came ready to play,” Oliver said. “I’m just trying to be a leader out there, keep everybody calm, and Gary Blackston stepped up for us big.”
The Clippers defense also was key in limiting Lake Clifton standout forward Derrick Green to three points, all coming in the first quarter. The Lakers got 11 points from senior Joshua Parks.
“They played tougher than us,” Lake Clifton coach Herman “Tree” Harried said. “I’m not being short, that was the difference in the game.”
