UMBC’s Caringi is named Division I Coach of the Year
UMBC coach Pete Caringi was named Tuesday as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Division I Coach of the Year. Over 24 seasons at UMBC, he has led the Retrievers to America East Conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances in four of the past five seasons and five overall. This season, the Retrievers advanced farther than any other UMBC sports team in history. UMBC set a tournament record by defeating four opponents on the road, all by shutout, before falling, 1-0, to eventual national champion Virginia in the College Cup semifinals Friday in Cary, N.C. The Baltimore native is 260-150-59 overall at UMBC.

Bel Air could face sanctions for using ineligible player
After a 10-win season, Bel Air faces possible state sanctions for using an ineligible player, Harford County Public Schools officials said Monday night. “School officials discovered that one Bel Air High school football player may have violated the residency rule,” Jillian V. Lader, manager of communications for the school system, wrote in an email. “They contacted the appropriate HCPS personnel to investigate and it was determined that a violation did occur.” Ned Sparks, executive director of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletics Association, the governing body for sports at the state’s public high schools, wasn’t available for comment. Harford County requires that athletes show proof of residency before they can participate in a high school sport. In many cases, use of an ineligible player results in the forfeiture of any games the team won while an ineligible player was on the team.

Pretlow leads Morgan St. men’s hoops to 1-point win
Donte Pretlow‘s basket with three seconds left gave the Morgan State men’s basketball team a 63-62 victory over visiting UC Irvine on Tuesday night. Cedric Blossom scored 22 points and Pretlow added 10 points for the Bears (2-8), who shot 23 of 48 (47.9 percent) from the field. After Jaron Martin hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to put Irvine ahead by a point, Pretlow (Dunbar) responded for the Bears with the go-ahead floater. Alex Young had 16 points for the Anteaters (4-5). … Host Bowie State shot 52.9 percent from the field in the second half to beat Palm Beach Atlantic, 91-83. The Bulldogs (8-4), led by a game-high 26 points from Cameron Knox (W.E.B. DuBois), outscored the Sailfish (5-3) 60-47 in the second half. Ronnell Ross and Garet Tucker each scored 20 points for Palm Beach Atlantic. … St. Mary’s College senior guard Nicholas LaGuerre (Lansdowne) was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
College football: Morgan State senior offensive tackle Darren Pinnock was named a Boxtorow All-American. Sophomore running back Herb Walker Jr. was an All-America honorable mention. … Lycoming junior wide receiver Ryan Umpleby (Fallston) was named Academic All-Middle Atlantic Conference.
Lacrosse: Stephen Berger (Mount Saint Joseph) and Baltimore’s Amy McCleary are among 10 individuals who will be inducted into the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame next month.
Youth soccer: At the Annandale Premier Cup Tournament in Northern Virginia last weekend, the Baltimore Bays Chelsea Lightning and the Perry Hall White Marsh Soccer Club Fury under-12 teams went undefeated in group play before meeting Sunday in the championship. After an even first half, PWHM won, 3-0.
